CHOOSING GLOVES

The first things that feel the cold are the fingers. In Estonia, it’s possible to surf until the water freezes! Even when the temperature is close to zero degrees.

Five finger gloves

Everybody loves the five finger gloves, because they give you maximum mobility and are the most comfortable. You can easily set up your gear and handle the bar. For most water conditions five finger (usually 2-3mm) gloves are suitable and would provide a good balance of warmth and flexibility. When it gets colder, a more suitable choice would be 5mm gloves (3-fingers).

Kitesurfing gloves are pre-curved, which makes it easier to hold the bar in the cold.

Three finger gloves

These gloves are usually 5mm and are the best choice in colder water. They give you warmth and as they have 3-fingers – you can hold the bar from the centre.

Tips to enjoy cold-water-surfing

When setting up the gear, use your “regular” warm gloves. That way you keep your hands warm and can be in the water for longer.

Take a thermos with warm water with you. When your fingers are cold, you can easily get the blood going with pouring warm water on fingers.

Prepare to be in the water for longer – for example when something happens with your gear. When you are not wearing a proper wetsuit, gloves and boots – you simply are not safe.
